How to Teach a Client to Do a Headstand
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in The Skill-Driven Mobility Coach →

In short: Teach a headstand by building core strength and shoulder mobility first, then progressing tripod to supported to full — with the neck neutral, weight shared between head and forearms, and a wall or spotter for safety.
A headstand is an impressive skill that builds strength, balance and confidence — but it's also a pose where poor teaching leads to a sore neck at best and an injury at worst. Here's how to guide a client through it safely, from the ground up.
Assess the client first
Before anything, understand who's in front of you. Every client differs in strength, experience and physical history. Check their core strength, shoulder flexibility and overall stability, and screen for any pre-existing neck or shoulder issues — if they're present, modify or avoid parts of the pose.
Confidence matters too. Some clients fear being upside down or lack the body awareness for it. Knowing that lets you adapt your approach and keep the environment supportive rather than intimidating.
Build the foundation
Prepare the body before you go anywhere near being inverted.
- Core strength for stability: planks, boat pose, leg lifts.
- Shoulder and upper-back mobility so the client has the range to hold position safely.
- Balance and proprioception with standing poses like tree pose and warrior III.
- Breathing and focus work to build the concentration the pose demands.
Teach proper form
Form is what separates a safe headstand from a neck injury. Explain the alignment of head, neck and shoulders: keep the neck neutral with the crown of the head pressing gently into the mat, shoulders engaged and drawn away from the ears to create space and avoid strain. Cue a long spine and an engaged core to give a stable base.
The step-by-step progression
Break the pose into manageable stages so it feels approachable rather than intimidating.
- Tripod position. Hands shoulder-width apart, head placed between them. With a strong core and engaged shoulders, the client lifts one leg at a time, drawing the knees towards the chest. This builds the strength and stability the headstand needs.
- Supported headstand. Press the forearms into the mat for a stable base. Engage the core, lift the hips, and extend the legs towards the ceiling — shoulders engaged, neck neutral throughout. Build up the time held as strength and confidence grow.
- Full headstand. Lift one leg at a time towards the ceiling, core engaged and shoulder girdle strong. Keep movements slow and controlled — no jerky or sudden motion. With practice, the client holds it with ease.
Fix the common mistakes
- Collapsed shoulders. Letting the shoulders sink towards the ears kills stability and strains the neck. Cue active engagement, drawing the shoulder blades down and away from the ears.
- Arching the lower back. This destabilises the pose and loads the lumbar spine. Cue a neutral spine by bracing the core and drawing the navel towards the spine.
- Over-reliance on the neck. Too much weight on the neck causes discomfort and risks injury. Teach the client to share the load evenly between head and forearms, using the core and shoulders to take pressure off the neck.
Progress, and keep it safe
Once the headstand is solid, keep clients challenged with extended-leg variations, forearm balance, or — for advanced clients — the press to handstand. Introduce these patiently.
Safety stays first throughout. Work on a non-slip surface, start against a wall with a spotter nearby, and reduce that support only as stability improves. Encourage clients to listen to their bodies and speak up about any discomfort — never to push through pain.
Taught this way, the headstand delivers real gains in core strength, balance, body awareness and confidence. To go deeper on coaching skills like this, explore the Skill-Driven Mobility Coach.

Frequently asked
Is a headstand safe to teach a client?
It can be, if you assess first and progress gradually. Screen for neck or shoulder injuries, build the foundation, and use a wall or spotter early on.
What's the biggest safety risk in a headstand?
Loading the neck. The weight should be shared between the head and forearms, with the neck neutral and shoulders engaged away from the ears.
How do you progress a headstand?
Tripod position first, then a supported headstand with the forearms down, then the full headstand — adding time and control at each stage.
What are the common mistakes?
Collapsed shoulders, arching the lower back instead of bracing the core, and putting too much weight on the neck.
What should a client build before attempting one?
Core strength (planks, boat, leg lifts), shoulder and upper-back mobility, and balance work like tree pose and warrior III.
