A hip hinge is bending at the hips. The industry made a fortune pretending it is harder than that

In short: A hip hinge is bending at the hips while the spine stays still. It is a fundamental a Level 3 trainer learns to teach and, more importantly, to see, which is the skill the industry keeps overcomplicating.

The short version

A hip hinge is bending at the hips while the spine stays still. That is the whole movement. It is one of the fundamentals a trainer learns to coach and spot to pass a Level 3, and the real skill isn't the definition, it is seeing it happen on a real person. The FASTER Level 3 teaches the eyes, not just the words.

Key Takeaways

  • A hip hinge is bending at the hips with a quiet spine. Deadlifts, kettlebell swings and picking a child off the floor are all the same move.
  • The fundamental is simple. The skill worth paying for is seeing it clearly and saying the one thing that fixes it.
  • The FASTER Level 3 is the driving licence: learn to teach and spot the basics, then watch them back on screen in the PT Manager.

The fourteen-part video series nobody needed

Somewhere right now a good trainer is halfway through a fourteen-part masterclass on the hip hinge, quietly worried they are missing something. They are not. It is bending at the hips. Someone sold them the idea it is complicated, because a simple movement is a hard thing to charge fourteen parts for.

The movement itself is dull to describe. The hips travel back, the knees soften a touch, the weight sits into the heels, and the spine does nothing at all. Then stand tall by pushing the floor away. A deadlift is a hip hinge. A kettlebell swing is a hip hinge. Scooping a toddler off the carpet is a hip hinge. One pattern, wearing different outfits.

Level 3 is the driving licence

On the FASTER Level 3, the hinge isn't a summit to conquer. It is a basic a trainer learns to teach and, more to the point, learns to see. Passing means setting someone up and watching whether the spine stays still while the hips move. That is the bar at this stage, and it is a fair one. Further along the FASTER road the same idea grows into a proper skill, training in tension, though that is a story for later.

Playing it down isn't false modesty about the course. It is the point. A trainer who treats the fundamentals as simple keeps room in their head for the client.

Why the industry makes it complicated

The reason is a little sad. Most courses hand a trainer a definition and a diagram, then send them off to guess whether the actual human in front of them is doing it right. Guesswork feels hard, so a simple movement earns a reputation it never deserved.

FASTER teaches the eyes instead. A trainer learns to look at a hinge and know in a second what is moving and what is staying put, then predict what one cue will change. That is HMAC: seeing movement, predicting it, and affecting it on purpose. Once a trainer can see it, the mystery goes, and the fourteen-part series starts to look a bit silly.

Seeing beats describing

Because watching matters more than reciting, the PT Manager does something rather lovely. Point the camera at the client and it draws a live skeleton right over them, tracking every joint as they move. Stand them side-on to a hinge and the hips and knees show up on screen in real time, depth and tempo and all, readable from three metres away while the set is still going. The client watches their own bones move and gets it in one go. No jargon, no diagram, just the movement, lit up.

That is one of the quiet perks of qualifying with FASTER: the tool that makes a trainer's eyes visible to the client sits right there waiting. And it matches how FASTER teaches everything. Watch it, read it, write the answer down, or say it out loud and dictate it. Whatever makes it stick for that person.

Frequently asked

Is the hip hinge hard to learn?

Not really. A hip hinge is bending at the hips while the spine stays still. The skill worth having is seeing it clearly on a real person, which the FASTER Level 3 teaches in a way a trainer can use the same afternoon.

What does the hip hinge have to do with a Level 3 course?

It is one of the fundamental movements a trainer learns to coach and assess to pass. FASTER focuses on teaching you to see it happening, not just recite the definition.

How does the PT Manager help with movements like this?

It lets a trainer film a movement and replay it beside the client, so they watch their own body move. Seeing it lands faster than describing it.
