Match the session to the body in front of you, not the plan you wrote last night

Match the session to the body in front of you, not the plan you wrote last night

In short: The same session plan is not one-size-fits-all. Level 3 asks trainers to explain exactly what changes when the client in front of them is sedentary, recovering from injury, over-trained, or a high-level or sport-specific performer, because each needs a genuinely different version of the same session.

The short version

A trainer writes one properly good session the night before, and by ten the next morning it has already met four different people. A sedentary client who hasn't trained in years. A client three weeks back from an injury. A client who has quietly been over-training for months and won't admit it. A sport-specific performer with a competition six weeks out. On paper it's one plan. In the room it needs to become at least four. Level 3 asks a trainer to be able to explain exactly what shifts for each one, not just sense that something should.

Key Takeaways

  • Level 3 names six client states directly: sedentary, recovering from injury, over-trained, high-level performer, sport-specific performer, and clients with low-risk health conditions.
  • Each one changes something specific about the session, not just the weight on the bar.
  • Knowing what to change, and why, is the actual skill the unit is testing.

What the unit asks

Unit A/617/8597 asks trainers to explain how exercise sessions can be adapted for clients who are sedentary, recovering from injury, over-trained, high-level performers, sport-specific performers, and clients with low-risk health conditions. Six named groups, six different reasons the same block of exercises stops being the right block.

That's a lot to hold in your head mid-session, which is exactly why it gets taught properly rather than left to instinct.

What changes, client by client

A sedentary client needs volume and intensity that respects a body that hasn't been asked to move much, built up in small steps rather than a diluted version of somebody else's programme. A client recovering from injury needs the session built around what's cleared to load and what isn't, with the rest of the plan still moving them forward. An over-trained client needs less, not more encouragement, and a trainer who can spot the signs before the client says a word. A high-level or sport-specific performer needs the session to serve the competition calendar, not just the muscle. And a client with a low-risk health condition needs a plan that accounts for it without treating them like they're fragile.

None of that is a lighter or heavier version of one master session. It's six different reads of the same room.

The system underneath it

This is what FASTER means by building the perfect programme and then editing it down. Write the best possible session for the goal, then adapt it to the actual person holding the water bottle, every single time. The industry tends to sell adaptation as an advanced skill for later in a trainer's career. It's the job, from the first session onward, and it's exactly what separates a trainer who reads the client from one who reads the plan.

What to do next

The Certified PT route covers all six adaptations properly, built visually and hands-on rather than as a list to memorise for an exam, because seeing a session change for a real body is how it sticks. PT Manager's Live Analyser gives you a second set of eyes on that same read: a live skeleton over the client from a single camera, so a client quietly running out of range mid-session shows up on screen, not just in your memory of how they looked last week.

Frequently asked

Does every client need a completely different session?

Not from scratch, but each of the six client states named in the unit changes something specific, like volume, load, rest, or how the session serves a competition calendar.

How do you know if a client is over-trained rather than just tired?

It tends to show before it's said: flattening performance, mood or sleep changes, and a client who insists they're fine. Spotting it early is part of what the unit asks a trainer to explain.

Is adapting sessions an advanced skill for later in a career?

No, it's the job from session one. FASTER treats it as core coaching, not a bonus skill added once you're experienced.
