Personal Trainer Imposter Syndrome, Part 3: Programme Design
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in Explore the mentored route →

In short: Imposter syndrome fades when you follow a repeatable programme-design order — build the long-term plan, then the session, choosing training systems and loading tools deliberately, and use story beats so the client feels good at the end, not just worked hard.
Imposter syndrome thrives on improvisation. When every session feels like you're making it up on the spot, the anxiety has room to grow. The fix isn't more confidence — it's a repeatable way to design what you deliver. We don't have a "Way" (that's as cringe as having a "Method"), but we do have an order of priorities.
Long-term programme design (if required)
Start at the top and work down:
- Build a plan that matches the sign-up length — often 12 weeks.
- Decide on the periodised approach that best suits the client.
- Build an emotional periodised layer over the top — one of the things that makes the FASTER approach different.
Session design
Then design the individual session:
- List the exercises the client loves.
- Add exercises that make the programme balanced.
- Design the story beats for the session.
- Choose the training systems that fit those exercises for the best outcomes.
- Lay the exercises and systems out along the story beats.
- Choose the best loading tools.
Training systems
Systems are just structured ways of organising work and rest. Pick them on purpose, not by habit:
| System | Type | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous | Aerobic | Steady-state cardio at moderate intensity (e.g. long-distance running). |
| Fartlek | Aerobic | Continuous work with spontaneous changes in speed and intensity. |
| Interval | Aerobic | Alternating high-intensity effort and rest (e.g. sprint intervals then walking). |
| Circuits | Both | Exercises performed in succession with minimal rest, mixing strength and cardio. |
| HIIT | Both | Short bursts of intense effort followed by rest, for full-body conditioning. |
| Peripheral Heart Action (PHA) | Both | Circuits alternating upper- and lower-body work to hold heart rate up. |
| Post-exhaust | Strength | A compound movement followed by an isolation exercise to fully fatigue a muscle. |
| Giant sets | Strength | Four or more exercises for the same muscle group with minimal rest. |
| Pre-exhaust | Strength | An isolation exercise before a compound movement (e.g. leg extensions before squats). |
| Drop sets | Strength | Working to failure, then reducing the weight to continue. |
| Pyramid sets | Strength | Gradually increasing then decreasing the weight across sets. |
| Forced reps | Strength | Extra reps with a spotter's help after failure. |
| Post-activation potentiation (PAP) | Strength | Heavy strength work followed by explosive movement (e.g. heavy squats then box jumps). |
Loading tools
Each tool creates force in its own way, which is exactly why you choose deliberately:
| Tool | How it creates force |
|---|---|
| Barbell | Symmetrical loading, handles heavy resistance using gravity. |
| Dumbbell | Independent limb work, raising stability demands through gravity. |
| Kettlebell | Ballistic, dynamic patterns using both gravity and momentum. |
| Resistance bands | Variable resistance through range, without relying on gravity. |
| Medicine ball | Explosive throwing and catching, using gravity for force. |
| ViPR | Whole-body, multiplanar force using gravity and momentum. |
| Escape CMT | An unstable load that challenges balance and control via momentum. |
| Battle ropes | Continuous waves, using momentum and gravity for resistance. |
| Sandbag | Shifting, unpredictable weight that enhances stability work. |
| TRX suspension | Adjustable resistance from body weight and gravity. |
Story-based programme design
Here's the part most programming misses. Programmes are usually dominated by the best physical choices — but for the majority of clients, from regulars to athletes, managing the experience is the most important part of building the session.
To do that, it helps to separate two words:
- Emotion — the physical response to a trigger.
- Feeling — the description we give to that physical response.
When you deliver the components of a programme and coach on top of them, you influence how the client feels. To use that, borrow story beats — a structure described by screenwriters (like McKee) and by people who teach improv and sketch. Story with beats organises feelings so the client ends up feeling good.
In its simplest form, plan the session in thirds:
- First third — the client feels comfortable.
- Second third — things get progressively tougher.
- Final third — move from the hardest point of the workout into a set of games and fun.
Design your sessions this way and confidence stops depending on how you feel walking in. It rests on a process you can repeat — which is exactly what closes the imposter-syndrome gap.

What every FASTER student gets
Built around you, not around the course
- A real person marks every answerEvery answer is read and marked by a tutor, with written feedback.
- Marked as you goEach teaching point is marked as you answer it, not at the end of the module.
- Dictate instead of typeA microphone on every written answer: say your answer and it types it for you (Chrome, Edge and Safari).
- Listen to the lessonsVoice-overs on the lessons, and the audio to download.
- Built for the way your brain worksShort lessons, one point at a time, marked as you go, with the choice to listen, read, print or speak your answers.
- Streaks that never punish youYou set how many days a week you want to study. Miss a day and your streak pauses; it is never lost.
- Accessible to WCAG AA, with an AAA optionEvery page measured against the WCAG accessibility standard: no faults at level A or AA, with a skip link, screen-reader labels and pages that hold together zoomed to 400%. A high-contrast option takes it to AAA.
- Keep it plainOne switch turns off the extras, the streaks, the badges, the celebrations and the movement, so the site stays plain and calm. Switch them back on whenever you like.
- Bigger text and wider spacingTwo steps of bigger text, and more room between lines, words and letters, on every page.
- Calmer motionOne switch stops animations and videos that play on their own. It is on already if your phone or computer asks for reduced motion.
- A personal video lessonWhen an answer needs real explaining, your marker records a video that lands in your course.
- A note before you sendBefore you send, the page tells you if your answer copies the lesson word for word, so you can put it in your own words.
- The skeleton and muscle labsTap any bone on the skeleton, and see the muscles light up on the model.
- Print the notesPrint the lessons and go old school.
- Case studies on your phoneBuilt into the site, saved as you go, there on your laptop when you sit down.
- Pin it to your home screenNo App Store and no Google Play. It is just there.
- No resit feesWork sent back is a chance to add more, with no resit fee.

Frequently asked
How does programme design help with imposter syndrome?
A clear order of priorities removes guesswork, so your confidence rests on a repeatable process rather than on feeling like you have to improvise everything.
What's the FASTER programme-design order?
Long-term programme design if needed, then session design — list loved exercises, balance them, add story beats, choose systems and loading tools, then lay it all out.
What's the difference between an emotion and a feeling?
An emotion is the physical response to a trigger; a feeling is the description we give to that physical response. Coaching influences both.
What are story beats?
A structure borrowed from screenwriting and improv: organise the session so the client feels comfortable, then challenged, then finishes on games and fun — good at the end.
How should a story-based session be shaped?
Roughly in thirds — the first third comfortable, the second progressively tougher, and the final third moving from the hardest point into games and fun.
