One question gets your client to name the barrier that is really ending sessions
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in the Level 2 and Level 3 routes →

In short: The barriers your qualification lists are the ones clients will admit to. The one that actually ends the relationship is usually something they are slightly embarrassed by, and you will only hear it if you have built the kind of conversation where it can be said.
The short version
Your qualification asks you to identify the typical barriers to exercise. Time, cost, confidence, energy, childcare. That list is real and it is worth knowing. But the typical barriers are the ones a client is willing to say out loud, and the one that actually ends the relationship is almost never on the list.
Key Takeaways
- The barriers on the syllabus are the ones clients will admit to.
- The one that ends it is usually specific, slightly embarrassing, and therefore unsaid.
- You do not find it by asking if everything is alright. You find it by asking a better question and then shutting up.
What the qualification asks for
Level 2 is explicit about this. Unit R/617/8590 asks you to identify the typical barriers to exercise/physical activity that clients experience, and then to describe different strategies that can help clients overcome them.
That is the right foundation, and most trainers can recite the list. Where it goes wrong is treating the list as the answer rather than the starting point.
Typical is not the same as true
A client tells you they are too busy. You believe them, because it is a sensible answer and it is on your list. You offer a shorter session, or an earlier slot, and it does not help, because "too busy" was the polite version.
The real one might be that they hate walking through the free weights area. That their partner makes a comment every time they leave the house in kit. That the standing order costs the same as the kids' swimming. That they are still sore from the session where you got carried away, and they do not want to say so in case it sounds like they cannot handle it.
None of those are unusual. All of them are things people find slightly humiliating to say to someone they see as fit and organised and in charge. So they say "work's mad at the moment", and you nod, and six weeks later they are gone.
Asking better
There is a question I use instead of "how has it all been going?", which invites the answer "yeah, good."
"What was the hardest part of the week?"
It presumes there was a hard part, which gives permission. It does not ask about training specifically, so the answer can be about the rest of their life, which is where the barrier lives. And it asks for one thing, so it is easy to answer honestly.
Then the hard bit: say nothing. The first answer is usually the acceptable one. The real one arrives in the silence afterwards, if you leave a gap big enough for it.
What you do with it
Once you have the real barrier, the strategy part becomes obvious, which is the bit the syllabus already covers well. You cannot solve "too busy" because it was never true. You can absolutely solve "I hate walking past the free weights" — you meet them at the door, or you use a different part of the gym for a month, or you train them somewhere else entirely until it stops mattering.
That is the difference between a trainer who knows the barriers and a trainer who removes them.
What to do next
The Level 2 and Level 3 routes cover this properly, and with me rather than a slide deck. The consultation skills are not a form to fill in; they are how you get told the truth early enough to act on it.
PT Manager helps with the part that happens after: it shows you who is slipping — attendance drifting, sessions rescheduled twice, gaps opening up — while there is still time to ask the question. Most clients do not leave suddenly. They fade, and the fade is visible if something is watching for it.

Frequently asked
Why do clients stop coming even when they are getting results?
Because results are not the only thing they are weighing up. Time, money, embarrassment, someone at home who resents the hour — none of those improve just because their squat did.
What is the difference between a typical and an untypical barrier?
A typical barrier is one they will say out loud: too busy, too tired, too expensive. An untypical one is specific to that person and usually slightly shameful to admit, which is exactly why it goes unsaid and why it wins.
How do I get a client to tell me the real reason?
Stop asking whether everything is alright. Ask what the hardest part of the week was, and then say nothing.
