Dose the soreness on purpose and your new client comes back for session two

In short: DOMS is a predictable response to novel or eccentric load, not proof a session worked. Level 2 asks you to describe it and identify what causes it, which means you choose how much of it a new client leaves with instead of finding out by accident.

The short version

There is a particular kind of proud a trainer feels when a brand new client can barely manage the stairs two days later. It reads as proof you know your job. Half the time, it is the reason that client never books a second session.

Key Takeaways

  • DOMS is a predictable response to novel or eccentric load, not a mark of a good session.
  • Level 2 asks you to describe DOMS and identify what causes it, which is the tool for dosing it on purpose.
  • A client who can't sit down comfortably for two days didn't get a great workout. They got a preview of quitting.

What the unit asks

Unit Y/617/8588 asks you to describe delayed onset of muscle soreness, then identify the exercises and techniques likely to cause it. Most trainers can recite the definition by the time they sit the exam. Fewer treat the second half as a dial they control, rather than a surprise they discover on Wednesday when the client cancels.

DOMS lands hardest after movement a body hasn't done before, especially anything loaded on the lowering phase. Give a brand new client a session built around unfamiliar eccentric work and they will feel it for days. The unit describes exactly that, in plain language, months before most trainers apply it to a booking.

Why the industry treats it as a badge

Somewhere along the way, "I couldn't walk for three days" turned into a compliment trainers go fishing for. A client wincing on the stairs gets posted like a trophy. It plays well on a feed and terribly in a diary, because the person behind that photo now has to decide whether session two is worth feeling like that again.

Nobody warns new trainers that soreness has a tipping point. A little of it tells a client something happened. A lot of it tells them training is something to survive rather than return to. The gap between "worked hard" and "wrecked" is the exact gap the unit is quietly asking you to manage, and the industry mostly celebrates landing on the wrong side of it.

Dosing it on purpose

Once you can identify what causes DOMS, you can choose not to trigger all of it in one go. Save the heaviest eccentric work, the unfamiliar movement, for once a client already trusts you enough to come back through some soreness. Session one has to earn the next booking. It doesn't need to prove anything beyond that.

This isn't playing effort down. Real work and honest difficulty still belong in a first session, Level 3 makes that point just as firmly as it makes this one. What changes is which parts of your toolkit you reach for on day one, and which ones you save for week three, once the relationship can absorb them.

What to do next

The Level 2 and Level 3 routes teach this properly, not as a definition to memorise for an exam and forget, but as something you learn to spot coming in an actual client. FASTER builds it visually and hands-on, so the effect becomes something you recognise mid-session, not just a line on a page.

PT Manager logs what each client did, session by session, so a pattern like this doesn't have to live in your memory alone. If soreness or load is trending somewhere it shouldn't, you can see it before a client quietly stops booking rather than after.

Frequently asked

Does a sore client mean I did my job well?

No. Soreness is a predictable response to novel or eccentric load, not proof of effort, and a client can get real benefit with far less of it.

Should a new client's first session avoid difficulty altogether?

No, it should be honest, not brutal. The unit is asking you to manage which unfamiliar movements you load hardest on day one, not to remove challenge.

How do I know if soreness cost me a rebooking?

Ask directly how the days after felt, and check PT Manager's session history for skipped or shortened sessions after the heaviest days.
