A Client's First Answer Is The Surface Goal, And The Interview Still Has Two Steps Left
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in Movement Trainer (AFT) — where the interview process is taught →

In short: Movement Trainer teaches the interview as three priorities, in this order: first, check the client sits inside a trainer's scope of practice to help at all; second, identify the client's real end goal, because "these promises are often built on the surface requirements of clients, and not on the real requirements of a client"; third, define the biomechanics and fitness requirements that real goal actually calls for. "I want to lose weight" is a surface answer a hundred other trainers could act on without asking anything else. The real goal, the thing the weight is standing in for, is what the second step of the interview is built to find, and the third step, the actual programme, only gets built once that's known rather than guessed.
"I want to lose weight" isn't the goal, it's the opening line
Movement Trainer starts the whole assessment process with a warning about the industry rather than a client: "Personal Training is an industry full of promises, often ones built on bad science," and it names exactly where those promises come from. They're "often built on the surface requirements of clients, and not on the real requirements of a client." A client's first sentence is a surface requirement. Nothing wrong with it, it's just not finished yet.
Three priorities, in an order that matters
The course lists them plainly. First, "ensure the client is within your scope of practice to help" — before anything else gets asked, because there's no point building an interview toward a plan a trainer was never going to be the right person to deliver. Second, "identify the real end goal of the client," the step this post is about. Third, "define the biomechanics and fitness requirements for the end goal" — the actual programme, and it only gets built once the second step has an honest answer underneath it.
Why the second step needs a second question
"I want to lose weight" and "I want to lose weight before my daughter's wedding in March" are the same first sentence, and they call for two different programmes. One has a fixed date and a reason underneath the number on the scale; the other might not. Neither client is being difficult by giving the short version first, that's what most people do with a stranger holding a clipboard. Finding the second sentence is the trainer's job, not the client's.
What this does to the third step
A programme built straight off the surface answer is built on a guess dressed up as information. A programme built after the real goal has been found is built on something a client actually said, not something a trainer assumed because it's what most people mean when they say it. Same movements can come out of both, the difference is whether the trainer knows why they picked them.

Frequently asked
What if a client genuinely just wants to lose weight, nothing more?
The interview still asks, because "I want to lose weight" and "I want to lose weight before my daughter's wedding in March" call for two different programmes, even though the first sentence out of both clients' mouths is identical.
Does checking scope of practice come before or after finding the goal?
Before. Movement Trainer puts it first: a trainer confirms the client is within what they're able to help with before finding out what the goal even is, so nobody spends an interview building toward a plan they were never going to be the right person to deliver.
Does finishing the course get me PT Manager?
Yes. PT Manager opens the moment a trainer signs up with any FASTER course, and adding real clients unlocks the day they pass one.
