A Programme Starts With Who Does What, And Movement Coach Opens Its Five-Step Process By Clarifying Roles Before Any Exercise Gets Picked
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in Movement Coach, where the full process is taught →

In short: Movement Coach teaches a five-step process for building and delivering a full programme. Step one is to clarify your own role, the client's role and responsibilities, and those of any other staff or professionals involved. Step two creates a positive, motivating and empowering environment using evidence-based strategies. Step three adds motivational strategies for long-term adherence. Step four recognises personal barriers to exercise and strategies to overcome them. Step five applies progression pressure for performance.
The programme begins before the first exercise
A programme is a list of movements attached to load, range, speed or repetition. A programme that works also needs a setting where the client knows what they are doing, what the trainer is doing and who else is involved. Movement Coach puts that setting first.
The five steps
The course gives the process as a list for building and delivering a full programme.
- Clarify roles. Your own role, the client's role and responsibilities, and those of any other staff or professionals involved in the programme.
- Build the environment. Use evidence-based strategies to create a positive, motivating and empowering setting that supports clients to take part in exercise.
- Plan for adherence. Bring in motivational strategies that encourage long-term exercise and other positive lifestyle practices.
- Meet the barriers. Recognise the client's personal barriers to exercise and use strategies to overcome them.
- Apply progression pressure. Raise the demand for performance once the first four are in place.
Why roles come first
Everything after step one depends on it. A client who knows their part, such as arriving, logging a session or telling the trainer how it felt, joins in as a partner. A trainer who knows where their job ends and another professional's begins keeps the programme inside its scope. Writing roles down takes minutes and saves long conversations later.
What it looks like in a first session
The trainer says what they will do: plan, adjust, record. The client says what they will do: attend, report, practise. If a physio, a coach or a gym team member is involved, the programme names them. One page of plain sentences carries all of it.
How the course teaches it
Movement Coach is visual and interactive. You read, listen, watch long videos of exercises built with the system, and answer in writing or by dictating. The course invites you to share programmes and ideas with the FASTER community.

Built around you, not around the course
- A real person marks every answerEvery answer is read and marked by a tutor, with written feedback.
- Marked as you goEach teaching point is marked as you answer it, not at the end of the module.
- Dictate instead of typeA microphone on every written answer: say your answer and it types it for you (Chrome, Edge and Safari).
- Listen to the lessonsVoice-overs on the lessons, and the audio to download.
- Built for the way your brain worksShort lessons, one point at a time, marked as you go, with the choice to listen, read, print or speak your answers.
- Streaks that never punish youYou set how many days a week you want to study. Miss a day and your streak pauses; it is never lost.
- Accessible to WCAG AA, with an AAA optionEvery page measured against the WCAG accessibility standard: no faults at level A or AA, with a skip link, screen-reader labels and pages that hold together zoomed to 400%. A high-contrast option takes it to AAA.
- Keep it plainOne switch turns off the extras, the streaks, the badges, the celebrations and the movement, so the site stays plain and calm. Switch them back on whenever you like.
- Bigger text and wider spacingTwo steps of bigger text, and more room between lines, words and letters, on every page.
- Calmer motionOne switch stops animations and videos that play on their own. It is on already if your phone or computer asks for reduced motion.
- A personal video lessonWhen an answer needs real explaining, your marker records a video that lands in your course.
- A note before you sendBefore you send, the page tells you if your answer copies the lesson word for word, so you can put it in your own words.
- The skeleton and muscle labsTap any bone on the skeleton, and see the muscles light up on the model.
- Print the notesPrint the lessons and go old school.

How many steps does the process have?
