Why your sessions are good but forgettable

In short: An experience is a collection of feelings in an order. So is a story. Programme the order deliberately — familiar start, rising tension, resolution — and the session becomes something the client can retell, which is the thing that brings them back.

The short version

You can write a session that is technically correct — sensible order, sound loading, appropriate progressions — and the client will still finish it feeling nothing in particular. That is not a programming error. It is a structure error. The session had content and no shape.

Key Takeaways

  • An experience is a collection of feelings in a particular order. So is a story.
  • A session with three acts — familiar start, rising tension, resolution — gets retold. A flat session gets forgotten, however good the exercises were.
  • The client is not comparing you to another trainer. They are comparing the hour to everything else they could have done with it.

Feelings arrive in an order

The FASTER material puts it plainly: an experience is really a combination of feelings and — fortunate for us — so is a story. In its simplest form a story is three different sets of feelings delivered in a specific order.

That is not decoration. It is a description of what your client is actually going through. Something triggers a response, the body reacts, the brain labels the feeling, and an action follows. String those together across an hour and you have either a sequence that means something, or one that does not.

Most sessions are a flat line. Warm up, work, cool down, done. Everything at the same emotional altitude. It is fine. Nobody tells their friends about fine.

The three acts

Start — familiar introduction. Something they can already do, done well. This is not a warm-up in the joint-mobility sense; it is the bit that establishes competence. They walk in carrying whatever their day was, and the first thing that happens is that they succeed at something. Now they are present.

Middle — progressive tension and difficulty. This is where the work lives, and crucially where it rises. Not hard-from-the-start, and not hard-in-patches. Something that builds, so that each block is a little more than the last and they can feel it building.

End — resolution. The part almost everyone drops. If the middle raises tension and nothing releases it, the client leaves mid-story. Resolution can be a return to the opening movement now performed better, a final set that proves the point, or simply the moment where you tell them what just happened and why. The session has to finish, not merely stop.

Why this makes them come back

The FASTER text notes something most trainers have seen and never named: use a training tool with a client for the first time and they are intrigued, they work, it gives them DOMS, they enjoy it — and next time, just seeing the tool triggers the reaction. The trigger got learned.

That is what you are building. Not a workout, a sequence they associate with a feeling. A client who can retell their session has had an experience. A client who says "yeah, it was good" had an appointment.

And it is why the same programme delivered in a different order gets a different result. The exercises did not change. The story did.

What to do next

The Movement Trainer course is where this is taught properly — how movement is triggered and felt, how to read the response you are actually getting, and how to build sessions and progressions around it rather than around a list of exercises you like.

PT Manager is where the session then lives, so the shape you designed is the shape that gets delivered next week, instead of being rebuilt from memory on the gym floor.

Frequently asked

Is this just about making sessions fun?

No. It is about the order feelings arrive in. A session can be hard and unpleasant and still be memorable if it resolves; it can be pleasant throughout and leave nothing behind.

Does story programming mean less hard training?

The opposite. The middle act is where tension and difficulty rise. What changes is that the difficulty lands somewhere, instead of being spread flat across an hour.

What does the Movement Trainer course cover?

How movement is triggered and felt, how to read the response you are getting, and how to construct sessions and progressions around that rather than around a list of exercises.
