Four Plain Checks Tell You If A Client's Test Result Means Anything
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in The honest route from scratch to qualified →

In short: Level 3 asks a trainer to check four things before trusting a client's assessment data: retest reliability (would the same test give the same answer again), inter-rater reliability (would another trainer get the same number), measurement error (was the method consistent) and observer bias (did you see the number you expected to see). None of it needs a statistics background, taught on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course before a trainer measures a client for real.
The short version
Somebody weighing up a personal training course reaches the word "reliability" in the syllabus and the whole thing starts to sound like a maths module wearing a fitness costume. It isn't. It's four plain questions about whether a number can be trusted, and most trainers ask two of them without ever being taught to.
Key Takeaways
- Level 3 asks a trainer to check four things before trusting a client's assessment data: retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, measurement error and observer bias.
- None of the four need a statistics background. They're plain checks on whether a number means what it looks like it means.
- One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is how to run these checks before a number decides anything about a client's programme.
The four checks, in plain words
Would the same test give the same answer again? That's retest reliability. Measure grip strength on Monday and again on Thursday with nothing else changed, and the two numbers should sit close together. Wildly different results mean the test, not the client, has a problem.
Would another trainer get the same number? That's inter-rater reliability. Two people measuring the same sit-and-reach with the same tape in the same spot should land close to each other. If they don't, the method needs tightening before the number gets used for anything.
Was the method itself consistent? That's measurement error. A tape measure pulled snug one day and loose the next, a scale on carpet instead of tile, a rep counted generously because the client looked tired: all of it puts noise into a number that looks perfectly precise on paper.
Did you see what you expected to see? That's observer bias. A trainer who already believes a client is improving can round a measurement kindly without meaning to. Naming the bias is most of the fix.
Why it matters more than the number itself
A single measurement, taken once, by one person, without checking any of this, can still look convincing written on a form. That's the trap: a number can be unreliable for reasons that have nothing to do with how small or unimpressive it looks. Nothing was done to check it would hold up a second time, and a programme built on it inherits the same shakiness.
One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is how to build these four checks into an assessment from the start, so the number a client sees is one worth building a plan around.
Point it at anything
The same four questions work on a bodyweight measurement, a fitness test, a range-of-motion score, a questionnaire answer. Ask them before the number gets written down, not after a programme has already been built on it.

Frequently asked
Do I need a background in statistics to understand this?
No. The four checks, retest, inter-rater, measurement error and observer bias, are plain questions about whether a number can be trusted, not a maths course.
What happens if a client's result fails one of these checks?
It doesn't get treated as fact on its own. It gets retested, or weighed against other information, before it decides anything about the programme.
