How Close You Stand To The Camera Changes How Confident You Sound
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in Fitness Business Accelerator — the on-camera delivery module this comes from →

In short: The same words, filmed close to the camera, read as confident and authoritative; filmed further back, they read as unsure, whatever's actually being said. An eye line held level with the lens reads as an open, direct conversation, a low angle looking up at a trainer reads as authority, and a high angle looking down reads as more approachable and reflective. Fitness Business Accelerator teaches these as deliberate choices to plan before filming, not accidents of wherever the phone happened to be propped, so a video says what it's meant to say rather than something nobody chose.
The words don't decide how confident you sound. The camera does
Two trainers can film the exact same sentence, word for word, and one sounds sure of themselves while the other sounds like they're apologising for being there. Neither one changed a word. What changed was where they stood.
What decides it, before anyone speaks
Fitness Business Accelerator's module on delivering to camera treats this as something to plan on purpose rather than something that just happens depending on where the phone got propped up. Three things do most of the work.
Distance. Standing close, filling a good chunk of the frame, "exudes confidence and authority", in the course's own words. Standing further back, with more of the room visible, reads as lower status, whatever's being said. A trainer opening a video with a confident claim and filming it from across the room is fighting their own framing.
Eye line. Looking straight into the lens, level with it, reads as "a direct conversation" with the person watching, intimate and engaging. Looking slightly off to one side or down at a screen below the lens breaks that, even if the words are exactly the same.
Camera angle. A camera at eye level feels neutral and approachable. A low angle, looking up at the trainer, reads as authority, useful for a moment that's meant to assert expertise. A high angle, looking down, reads as more vulnerable or reflective, useful for a quieter or more personal moment. None of these is the "right" one. They're tools, and which one gets used depends on what the sentence is trying to say.
Why this matters more than the script
A trainer can spend an hour writing the perfect caption and film it in thirty seconds without thinking about any of this, and the framing will still say something, just not necessarily the thing that was meant. Everything in frame is presumed deliberate by whoever's watching, the course's own line, and that includes the distance and the angle nobody consciously chose.
What to do next
Fitness Business Accelerator is £500, paid in full or spread over three payments with Klarna at no extra cost, and the delivering-on-camera module this comes from sits alongside the rest of the content-creation work, building a shot list, editing, and the storytelling beats a video needs. PT Manager opens the moment you sign up, and its Content Studio is where a trainer can film and put together what this teaches.
FASTER Daily News sends you each day's blog links, the latest on new courses and live opportunities, and updates to PT Manager, free for students. Sign up at /newsletter.

Frequently asked
Do I need proper filming equipment to get this right?
No, a smartphone on a tripod is enough, the eye line and distance rules are about where the phone sits, not what it's filming on.
Should every video use the close, confident distance?
Not necessarily, the course frames these as deliberate choices, a closer distance to open with, more distance for a reflective moment, matched to what's actually being said.
Does finishing the course get me PT Manager?
Yes, PT Manager opens the moment you sign up with FASTER, and the Content Studio is where the filming and editing actually happen.
