The Consultation You Will Be Asked To Run Uses Four Methods, And A Form Is Only One Of Them
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in the Level 2 and Level 3 personal training course from scratch →

In short: The Level 2/3 personal training course teaches four methods for collecting client information: a questionnaire (such as a PAR-Q), an interview, observation and physical measurements. The questionnaire finds specific facts. The interview builds rapport and lets a trainer probe. Observation checks the client before and during exercise. Physical measurements give SMART goals something to measure. A new trainer does not need to be a natural at all four on day one, because each is a skill with a clear job that the course teaches in turn.
The short version
If you are changing career and picturing your first consultation, picture four things rather than one: a questionnaire, an interview, watching the client move, and a tape measure or scales. One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is what each of the four is for.
Key Takeaways
- The course teaches four methods: questionnaire, interview, observation, physical measurements.
- Each has its own job, so none of them needs to be a natural talent.
- Together they give a first-time trainer a plan for the whole first meeting.
A form finds specific facts
A questionnaire, such as a PAR-Q, is a way of finding out specific information. It adapts easily and does not have to be filled in face to face. Many gyms put one into the online sign-up. The course adds a small, kind detail: a trainer may need to help a client understand some of the questions. Reading a form out with a friendly face is part of the job.
An interview finds the person
Interviewing is the course's "amazing way to get to know a client and build rapport". It is where you probe. A form says a client wants to lose weight. An interview is where you hear what they are hoping that will change. The first one can feel awkward, and the course says so, which tends to be a relief for anyone who has worried they are not chatty enough.
Observation is a quiet skill
Observation checks the client before and during exercise. You are looking at how they walk in, how they move through a warm-up, and whether they are holding something back. It costs nothing and needs no equipment. It is also the method that grows fastest with practice, which is why we teach it alongside tools that help you see more.
Measurements give goals something to stand on
SMART goals need measuring, so physical measurements let a trainer track the goal that was agreed. Weighing and measuring are the examples the course gives. Done first, they give the start line. Repeated later, they show the distance travelled.
Why four, and why this is good news for a beginner
Four methods means no single one has to carry the consultation. If you are quiet, the form and the measurements do plenty of work. If you are chatty, the interview shines. The course teaches all four, and you practise them on your way to a CIMSPA-recognised qualification that insurers and gyms look for.

Frequently asked
What are the four methods of collecting client information?
Questionnaire, interview, observation and physical measurements. The Level 2/3 personal training course teaches all four, and what each one is best at finding out.
Is a PAR-Q enough for a first consultation?
A PAR-Q is one example of a questionnaire, which finds specific information. The course pairs it with an interview, observation and measurements, because each finds something the others miss.
Do I need experience to learn this?
No. Each method has a clear job and the course teaches them in turn, so a first-time trainer learns them as skills rather than needing to be a natural.
Does finishing the course open PT Manager?
PT Manager opens the moment you sign up with FASTER, and adding real clients unlocks the day you pass a course.
