What Muscles Work In A Kettlebell Swing, And How To Work It Out For Any Exercise
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in The honest route from scratch to qualified →

In short: A kettlebell swing is driven by the glutes and hamstrings, lengthening on the backswing and then snapping the hip straight to send the bell forward. The adductors help close the hip alongside them, and the lats steer the bell's arc and slow it at the top instead of letting it fly wide. The core supports the spine through the hinge and the reversal so none of that hip drive leaks into the lower back, and the forearms and grip hold on for the whole set. The four steps that produce that answer are: decide where the force is acting, find the muscles working directly against it, find the muscles assisting, then find the muscles supporting the joint, the same four steps that already answered the same question about a squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw and a vertical jump.
What muscles work in a kettlebell swing
The glutes and hamstrings, lengthening under load as the bell swings back between the legs and then contracting hard to snap the hip straight and send it forward. The adductors, helping close the hip alongside them. The lats, steering the bell's arc and controlling it at the top instead of letting the weight fly out wide. And the core and the forearms, the core supporting the spine through the whole hinge and reversal, the forearms gripping the handle for every single rep.
That's the answer, and like the squat, the lunge, the deadlift, the press-up, the row, the shoulder press, the loaded carry, the suspended plank, the sprint, the medicine ball throw and the vertical jump before it, it came from a method rather than a memorised list.
Nobody's taken a client yet, and that's fine
Somebody weighing up a career change into personal training can watch a kettlebell swing on a phone and file the whole thing under "core," which tells them almost nothing about what the hips are doing to make the bell move at all. One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is a method that turns that vague word into a specific list of muscles, each doing exactly the job it's built for, on every swing.
Twelve exercises in, and the method still hasn't changed
A squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw and a vertical jump have all run through the same four steps:
- Decide where the force is acting on the body
- Identify which muscles work directly against that force (muscles that lengthen are easiest to see)
- Identify which secondary muscles assist that movement
- Identify which muscles would support that joint / movement
Run it on a kettlebell swing.
One, where is the force acting? Backward and down, through the hips, as the bell swings between the legs on the backswing and has to be reversed into a forward drive.
Two, what works directly against it? The glutes and the hamstrings, lengthening hard on the way back and then contracting to snap the hip open and send the bell forward.
Three, what assists? The adductors, helping close the hip alongside the glutes and hamstrings, and the lats, guiding the bell's path and slowing it at the top of the arc so it stays on line.
Four, what supports? The core, keeping the spine supported through the hinge so the drive comes from the hips and not from a rounding lower back, and the forearms, holding the handle through the whole set, backswing and drive alike.
Why that fourth answer is worth having
A trainer who only knows "swings work the core" has nothing specific to watch for when a client's lower back is doing the work the hips should be doing. A trainer who has run the four steps is watching the hip hinge itself, which is usually where a swing starts costing a client height on the bell long before their grip gives out.
Point it at anything
A single-arm swing, where the same hip snap happens but one side of the core now has to resist the bell trying to rotate the trunk with it. An American swing, where the bell travels overhead and the lats and shoulder have a longer path to control. A swing with a heavier bell, where the grip and the lats doing the steering get the biggest jump in demand. Any hip-hinge movement a client already does can be answered the same way, without a new list to learn.

Frequently asked
Does the swing work the shoulders as much as the hips?
The hips do the heavy work, the glutes and hamstrings snapping the movement, but the lats and the rear of the shoulder are doing real work too, steering the bell and stopping it flying past where it should stop.
Is a kettlebell swing a squat with a weight in your hands?
No. A squat bends mainly at the knee and hip together; a swing hinges almost entirely at the hip, which is why the same four steps land on a different set of prime movers even though both exercises involve the glutes.
Does finishing the course get me PT Manager?
