What Muscles Work In A Mountain Climber, And Why The Core Does More Than The Legs

In short: A mountain climber reads as a leg exercise because the knees are what's moving, but the legs are the easy part. The core, mainly the rectus abdominis and the obliques, has the harder job of holding the trunk still against the pull of each knee drive, stopping the hips from rising or rocking. The hip flexors do drive the knee forward, and the glutes and quads of the trailing leg push it back into position, but the shoulders and chest are carrying close to half the bodyweight through the whole set, which is easy to forget because nothing about them looks like it's moving. The four steps that produce that answer are: decide where the force is acting, find the muscles working directly against it (the ones lengthening are easiest to see), find the secondary muscles assisting, then find the muscles supporting the joint. The same four steps have already answered the same question about a squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw, a vertical jump, a kettlebell swing, a band wood chop, a bird dog, a single-leg overhead reach, a hip hinge, a lateral lunge, a lateral shuffle, a split squat, a single-leg deadlift, a bear crawl, a beast position, a walking lunge, a high kick, a Romanian deadlift, a single-arm overhead squat and a step-up.

What muscles work in a mountain climber

Look at a mountain climber for two seconds and the knees are the whole story: one drives in, the other drives back, over and over, fast. That's what the eye follows, and it's why most people, including some trainers, would guess the legs are doing most of the work. Run the method on it and the legs turn out to be the easy part.

The one that looks harder than it is to explain

Somebody weighing up whether they could actually do this for a living has probably watched a class hammer through a set of mountain climbers and assumed the coaching is just "go faster". One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is a method that gets specific about what's really working under a movement that fast, and a mountain climber is a good test of it, because the obvious answer and the real answer aren't the same muscle group.

Twenty-eight exercises in, and the method still hasn't changed

A squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw, a vertical jump, a kettlebell swing, a band wood chop, a bird dog, a single-leg overhead reach, a hip hinge, a lateral lunge, a lateral shuffle, a split squat, a single-leg deadlift, a bear crawl, a beast position, a walking lunge, a high kick, a Romanian deadlift, a single-arm overhead squat and a step-up have all run through the same four steps:

  1. Decide where the force is acting on the body
  2. Identify which muscles work directly against that force (muscles that lengthen are easiest to see)
  3. Identify which secondary muscles assist that movement
  4. Identify which muscles would support that joint / movement

Run it on a mountain climber.

One, where is the force acting? Down through both hands into the floor, taking close to half the bodyweight for the entire set, and down through whichever foot is planted at any given moment as the other knee drives forward.

Two, what works directly against it? The rectus abdominis and the obliques, working hard to stop the trunk sagging or rocking as each knee drive tries to throw the hips off balance. This is the part that's easy to miss, because a muscle holding still doesn't move, and the eye is drawn to whatever is moving.

Three, what assists? The hip flexors on the driving leg, pulling the knee forward fast, and the glutes and quads on the trailing leg, extending it back to the plank position. The shoulder stabilisers and the chest hold the upper body rigid over the hands, the same job they do in a suspended plank, just carrying it through constant movement instead of stillness.

Four, what supports? The wrists and forearms, taking the full weight through a joint that wasn't built to bear it for long, and the lower back muscles, working alongside the core to keep the spine from arching as fatigue sets in through the set.

Why the legs get the credit and the core does the work

A trainer who hasn't run the method watches a mountain climber and coaches the knees, telling a client to drive faster or higher. The knees were never the hard part. When a mountain climber changes shape, it is usually the hips creeping up or sagging down, not the legs slowing, and coaching the legs misses what is happening.

Point it at anything

Any exercise that asks the trunk to stay rigid while a limb moves fast underneath it is asking the same core muscles the same question: a plank with a shoulder tap, a bear crawl held under load, a press-up with a slow tempo. Once a trainer can name what holds the trunk still on a mountain climber, the same answer covers all of them, without a new list to learn.

Frequently asked

Is a mountain climber really a core exercise?

Mostly, yes. The knees move fastest so they look like the main event, but the core's job of holding the trunk still against that movement is the harder, more important one.

Why do the shoulders matter in a mountain climber?

Because roughly half the bodyweight is running through them for the whole set, the same load a suspended plank asks of the same joint, just held for longer here instead of moved through.

Does finishing the course get me PT Manager?

Yes. PT Manager opens the moment you sign up with FASTER, and adding real clients unlocks once you pass a course.
